A Visit to the Apple Orchard

Reid's class went on a field trip to the apple orchard. We went on a hay ride, saw a few farm animals, and watched them make some apple cider. We had great weather, even though it was a little chilly. We also had some apple cider and donuts for a little snack.
Maggie and Sam snuggle up to Mrs. M on the hayride.

Reid and Cameron have a good time on the hayride together.

Drew and Mandy enjoy a peaceful ride together.

We had to pick apples from a box this year instead of from the trees because the hail this season damaged many local apple crops.

The process of making apple cider is an interesting one. However, it is not very appetizing to watch. I have a hard time drinking apple cider after watching the way they make it.

They grind up the apples and shoot them out of a tube (It starts looking golden brown) They fill up trays covered with large cloths with this brown chucky liquid and wrap the cloth around the apple goop. They repeat this process until they have several trays stacked and then they squeeze the trays together. They cider comes pouring out where they fill their gallon jugs. They do this all in a barn where things don't seem very sterile. When you see the process and then have to drink the golden brown liquid it is hard to remember it is actually apples and not other fluids!

I thought it was sweet. You looked like you were enjoying Drew's company! If nothing else we were able to spend some time with our boys right!
